Description of Llyn Tegid (Bala)

Situated in the Snowdonia National Park, the lake is the source of the River Dee. The lake is over looked by mountains and is located just outside Bala Town. Bala is the second longest lake in Wales and is 3 miles long. Water from the River Dee is drawn off by United Utilities and supplied to areas of the Northwest, naturally the water quality is good.

On the southeast bank there is a narrow gauge railway which runs along the lakes length. The railway now used as tourist attraction dates by to days when slate was mined in the area. Also on the south side of the lake there are a number of sailing clubs.

The northwest bank of the lake shore runs the A494 trunk road towards Dolgellau. At the southern end of the lake there is a campsite and sailing club at Llanuwchllyn. A tributary to the lake enters here. This is the start of the one way races.

At the northern end of the lake there is a car park. At the entrance to the car park there is a café. Bala Leisure Centre is behind the car park.

At this end of the lake there is a small stone jetty. This is where the Novice and two way race start from. All races finish here. In addition all the race briefings are held here.
